A stormwater basin is above all a basin which collects excess rainwater generated during storms. But it's also an important tool used in the wastewater purification process.
These basins are found in urban environments as well as along major roadways. Stormwater basins are located along highways to enable removal of run-off and serve as drainage areas. But this water may be contaminated by roadway surfaces (tire and brake wear) and exhaust. Sediment sludge which accumulates at the bottom of the basins may also be contaminated and will need to be treated or buried to avoid polluting groundwater and waterways.

During heavy rainfall, the quantity of water taken in at water purification stations increases and saturates them. This excess water is rerouted to the stormwater basins. When the stormwater basin is full, the water is significantly diluted (owing to the pollutant/total water ratio) and will be easier to treat later at the purification plants.
